Split system or ducted: which suits your home?
Both will keep you cool through a Queensland summer. The right one depends on your home's layout, how many rooms you actually use and what you want it to look like.

Split systems
A split system has two parts: an indoor unit on the wall and an outdoor condenser, joined by refrigerant pipes. Each indoor unit cools the room it’s in.
They’re a great fit for single rooms, open-plan living areas, apartments, townhouses and smaller homes, anywhere ducting would be impractical or costly. Modern inverter units are efficient and quiet, and you can add more over time as your budget allows.
Ducted systems
Ducted air conditioning uses one central unit, usually in the roof space, with concealed ducts running to vents in each room. All you see is a discreet vent in the ceiling and a controller on the wall.
It suits larger homes where you want to cool several rooms at once. With zoning, you can switch individual areas on or off, so you’re not paying to cool bedrooms during the day.
Questions to ask yourself first
Which rooms do you actually use most, day and night?
Do you have roof space for ducting, or is it a low-pitch or flat roof?
Would wall units suit the look of your rooms? If not, a floor console might.
Is this your long-term home, a rental, or a holiday property?
