Getting your AC ready before summer
Quick checks you can do yourself, and when to book a service before the December rush.

The first really hot day of the year is the worst time to find out your air con isn’t working. A few simple checks now, and a service before the rush, mean it’s ready when you need it.
Quick checks you can do yourself
You don’t need any tools for these. Just make sure the system is switched off before you open anything.
Clean the filters. Lift the front cover of the indoor unit, slide the filters out, rinse them under the tap and let them dry fully before putting them back.
Clear around the outdoor unit. Pull out weeds, leaves and anything stored against it. It needs space around it to breathe.
Check the remote. Put in fresh batteries and make sure the settings haven’t been changed.
Do a test run. Turn it on to cool for 20 minutes on a mild day. It should blow steadily cold air without strange noises or smells.
Check the drain. While it’s running, look for water dripping outside from the drain pipe. That’s normal. Water dripping inside the house isn’t.
Signs it needs a professional
If you notice any of these during your test run, book a service before summer arrives:
A musty or mouldy smell
Weak airflow, or air that isn’t very cold
Water leaking from the indoor unit
Rattling, buzzing or grinding noises
Black spots on the vents or louvres
It turns itself off, or shows an error light
Book before the rush
From December, every air con business on the Coast is flat out with breakdowns and new installs. Booking your service in spring means you get a time that suits you, any problems are picked up early, and your system is clean and ready for the hottest weeks of the year.
